Holidays for the Environmentally Aware Skier

Thousands of keen skiers will soon be searching for their ski gear and shooting off in search of the deepest snow conditions.

And beyond question the result of your carbon footprint will be close to as far down the list of holiday musts as a Christmas tree after xmas.

Merely last year, a slow snowfall hit the broadsheets and holidaymakers panicked about the smattering of snow melting nearly as soon as they settled.

Skiing company Chalet1802, located at the base of Mount Blanc in Chamonix Mont Blanc France in the French Alps, is one of the only independent businesses to go carbon neutral and afford skiers an environmentally friendly alternative when organising their ski vacations.

Chalet1802 owner GALM said: Last year was quite a surprise with the most warm winter in 50 years in the French Alps. Mountain ski fields such as Luz Ardiden, Montroc and La Tania suffered. It was balmy and the snowfall did not last so a lot of the early winter skiing season in the Alps was uneven. We chose to become carbon negative to help preserve the ski resort.

GALM said: We’re not assaying to dictate to guests but I consider its crucial to give the guests the choice without raising the cost of the ski holiday. When they book with us and visits our Chamonix chalet they may more than off set their carbon footprint and we soak up the additional prices. Naturally we still have a sauna and a hot tub – people require luxury but not at the expense of the environs, so we considered means of lessening the impact of a skier driving over here for a snowboarding holiday.”
