Sugar Glider Diets

We always talk about the diet of sugar gliders and that it should be proper, and we always try our best to give them good food. But many times what we think doesn’t happen. If we were to show our dietary plan to some Vet doctor, he would definitely tell us we are completely wrong in our thinking. Most of the doctors recommend a high protein diet that must include crickets, mealworms, grasshoppers, eggs and meat. But this diet is not always recommended, in every case, as most of the time doctors wish to see the sugar glider and see what the deficiency is.

Now a question arises as to what is the ideal diet? This is not an easy question to answer. Personally, I can not give you the answer, so I refer to the recommendations of Dr. Johnson Delaney, a famous veterinarian and researcher of sugar gliders.

Dr. Johnson is an experienced veterinarian and also the author of many books and research papers. He designed a diet program for sugar gliders after doing extensive research on them and after consulting with Australian Zookeepers and veterinarians.

Dr. Johnson’s recommended diet program for sugar gliders is

• 1 tablespoon lead beater’s mix

• 1 tablespoon zoo quality insectivore or insects. (Remember that variety is important if you use insects in a diet)

• You can also give them a small amount of chopped fruit
This is the diet program recommended by Dr. Johnson and it looks pretty good for health. Before using any diet program for sugar gliders, please consult with your local veterinarian.
