Inspire Initiative - For To Be Is Up to Me

January 5th, 2009

What makes someone take the risk and become an entrepreneur? Why would any individual leave a comfortable life and risk his or her savings on a dream? What makes an individual willing to do the impossible? Why would someone risk national failure by performing in front of millions of people hoping for that exclusive recording contract?

After coaching numerous entrepreneurs, executives and small business owners, I have discovered one characteristic that they have in common — initiative . They consistently use initiative to overcome the obstacles of life. And what is even more important, these individuals have infused initiative into their own interpersonal skill sets. They truly understand that “Whatever is to be, is up to me.”

Initiative begins in our early childhood. As children, we are curious about our environment and take every opportunity to explore and feel the world around us. Tapping into that childhood curiosity generates the foundation for initiative action capacity.

Unfortunately, initiative due to constraints of society as well as every day conditioning, can be permanently damaged. We quickly learn not to “push the envelope” and not to “draw outside the lines.” Taking initiative presents issues for others because they may not know how to respond or the outcomes may not be their “right answer.” Even as adults, initiative continues to present challenges because we want to “fit in” and don’t want to be recognized as the “geek” or “nut” who is always doing something different.

Overcoming inertia or the obstacles of life requires the ability to take the initiative, to take a chance, to risk failure. Learning how to rebound from unsuccessful initiatives is just as important as learning how to take the initiative. Even though initiative is innate within us, we must continually feed the flame and keep the candle burning brightly so that we can unleash the incredible potential within us.

Developing initiative begins by first looking into your own beliefs and identifying where you strengths lie. If you believe that you lack initiative, then you must begin to inspire yourself to believe differently! Initiative comes from within your own beliefs of who you are and what you can do to change your life or the lives of others.

Today’s world demands individuals who can take the initiative by working in an environment of freedom and can recognize and encourage the initiative within others. Just imagine the possibilities for your own business or your own life, if you, your employees or your family embraced each day with the thought of “How can I make this the best day ever?”

Now is the time to take the initiative and as Captain Picard so famously said: “Make it So!”

Beyond the Arch of Swords: Making Military Marriage Last

January 5th, 2009

Melissa Wallace of Camp Pendleton, California is a tall, wispy woman, with a soft voice and gentle smile. The wife of 25-years to a Sgt. Maj. in the Marine Corps, Melissa and her husband John talk wistfully about the life that is soon to be behind them, as Sgt. Maj. Wallace prepares for retirement. Melissa and John were married in 1976. Several years later, following the birth of their first son, John enlisted in the Marine Corps in hopes of finding a better life for his young family. Together the Wallace’s have seen four states, two countries and added three more sons to their family. They have survived two overseas tours, one that was unaccompanied, and an average of three deployments a year for the last 20 years. They celebrated their silver anniversary this past fall. There is no doubt that Melissa and John have faced challenges that have crumbled lesser marriages. Yet, looking at them today, there is no doubt they are as much in love as the day they married.

Melissa reflects, “Throughout John’s service to the Corps, I’ve often been asked what it’s like to be married in the military. At first thought, I’d reply that marriage is marriage no matter the circumstances. But to say so would deny all the positive effects the military has had on our life together, and there have been many. Marriage in the military is tough. It is full of every challenge and adversity you could imagine. Yet, it’s those challenges that make us stronger and ultimately make our marriage better.”

Emily Travis can relate to challenges. A new bride of the military, Emily and her husband Todd are currently undergoing a six-month separation, just two months on the heels of their nuptials. Emily is 20-years old and away from home for the first time in her life while her husband, Naval Petty Officer Travis, is “on a big, gray boat, oceans away.”

“I miss him dearly,” muses Emily, “but I try not to dwell on that. I wouldn’t have chosen to have my husband away from me, but since he is, I’m taking this as an opportunity to show Todd the strength of my love for him. It takes real effort to nurture a relationship like ours, and I feel fortunate to have the chance to prove I’ll be here for him no matter what, regardless of how long I have to wait.”

The day-to-day details of marriage military style may vary, but the underlying theme is the same. Marriage requires commitment, understanding and patience, even under the best of circumstances. The demanding circumstances of military life lend even more importance to adhering to these values. Relationship expert Barbara DeAngelis, Ph.D., author of Real Moments, writes, “Marriage is not a noun, it’s a verb. It isn’t something you get, it’s something you do…marriage is not a wedding ring, or a piece of paper that proves you are husband and wife, or a party that says you’ve been married for twenty-five years. Marriage is a behaviorit is how you love and honor your partner every day…it is a choice you make, not just on your wedding day, but over and over again, and that choice is reflected in the way you treat your husband or wife.”

Melissa Wallace shares a tradition that she and her husband used during deployments and other separations to enrich their marriage. “We kept individual journals all the time. The journals were written for each other and were like one big, long letter of all our hopes and fears and feelings. Whenever John would go away, we’d exchange them. With these journals, it was almost like we were still together, because we’d share all the day-to-day things you miss out on when you’re apart. Not only that, but we always seemed to learn new, special things about one another we wouldn’t have known otherwise. We still cherish these books years later. It’s like a chronicle of how far we’ve come in our marriage.”

Staying close is important for all coupleseven those separated only as far as the next room in the house. Military requirements are not necessarily easier simply because you share the same living space. Long hours and demanding occupational specialties coupled with family responsibilities, can leave even the closest couples with little time to connect. Having that connection however, is the glue that sticks families together through the trials of military life. Yet, surviving the trials is only the first step towards a successful military marriage. Couples must also learn to make something positive of the challenges and come to understand that each challenge is just another opportunity in disguise for growth, both as individuals and as a couple.

Emily Travis chose to go back to school in her husband’s absencesomething she feels she would not have chosen to do otherwise. “Todd is having a multitude of new experiences and I know he’ll be different because of them when he comes home,” she relates. “That makes me want to have new experiences and better myself too. I think it’s important not to stagnate myself and stop growing, just because I’m waiting to be reunited with my husband.”

Deployments, separations, and even the most successful career in the military will eventually end, but marriage is meant to last a lifetime. It is a lesson the Wallace’s learned early. “Did we have problems? Absolutely. Were there times I wanted to say it’s the Marine Corps or me? Yes. And were there times we were so thick in the middle of our difficulties we couldn’t see a way out? Most definitely. But those were the times we dug in our heels and just held on. Everything changes. It was just a matter of holding on until better days came, and when they did, we were amazed at how much closer we were for having endured together, and how much our marriage had been strengthened by our faith to stay.”

A party was recently given in honor of John and Melissa by co-workers and friends from Camp Pendleton. John gave a speech about his time in the Corps and what it meant to have Melissa by his side the whole way. He spoke of his years of service, the happiness they had shared and the tears they had shed. He talked of the achievements and honors he had gained in the Corps. Yet, to sum up, he had only one thing to say. “I am the Marine,” relates John, “but Melissa gives me the heart.”

Easy Fitness For Time Crunched Moms

January 4th, 2009

Moms have a tough time. They are the cook, the maid, the taxi driver, the teacher, the referee, and the list could go on. Mom’s know how to get everything done for everyone else, but by doing this they often don’t take care of themselves. There is no question that it is hard; children keep parents on the go, it is difficult to do the things you’d like to do.

They can squeeze in a last minute dentist appointment for little Teddy and show up without a moment to spare for a class play that little Tommy forgot to mention. Super mom can always find time to do whatever needs to be done to run a happy home for all of the occupants. School schedules, car pools and after school activities combined with household chores and a full-time job doesn’t allow for much time to exercise. That is no longer good enough it is only an excuse.

Taking care of yourself with plenty of rest and exercise should just be one of those little things that you mark on the calendar and do. In fact, do it now. Mark in your day planner or on the dry-erase board your “me-time.” Then, dust off that tennis racket and head on out for the courts with one of your girlfriends, or join a Fitness Center, or take up walking for overall health and fitness. Procrastination is a word that has no meaning for moms wanting to do something nice for their children, the same should apply for what you want or need to do.

Diversify your fitness schedule to include solo walks, tennis matches with girlfriends, and horseback riding with your husband. Be creative in planning your week ahead. If you know that on Monday you have to pick up your daughter from school at 3:00, but your son gets out at 2:30, make proper use of your time and throw your Nike shoes in a gym bag and walk while you wait. If your daughter has a volleyball practice 25 minutes across town at the high school, then take your swimsuit and use the school’s swimming pool to swim laps. Most schools don’t mind if you call ahead and some even offer free swims on certain days of the week.

The important thing for you to remember is that because you are a mom, you may have to jump in and take advantage of a thirty-minute window just to exercise. Be ready for these chances and learn to expect the unexpected and take care to use the time wisely. If the birthday party you son is at ends up being late, take the chance to walk once or twice around the block. When you get back you’ll have helped out your heart and your son will be ready to go.

It doesn’t take much except taking the opportunities to exercise when they present themselves.

Nice deal 10000 dollar at a beneficial interest rate of 14.3 percent

January 4th, 2009

Examine to see if the moneylender who is tending to give you a credit loan is safe. That’s the reason why now you need to check and image if you can have a money loan at a upright percent rate. It doesn’t matter if you live in Edmonds Washington or in Elyria Ohio a honorable online analysis will unbosom you often lots of pain. You should be promising today to analyze if you have a special offer or if you don’t with the merchant bank that offers you a bank loan. A bank in Baytown Texas or so can have a total different actual loan rate for a 25000 dollar bank loan then a merchant bank in Davis California and that makes a vast clear difference in your weekly costs. Many of the moneylenders wil show you a rate of interest that looks safe but feels naughtily or so after some time.

Now you can check up on rates quickly on the internet and assure if there are other conditions you should be aware of. 6.3 percent interest rate may seem so honest but will it stay unalterable after you’re going to return your credit loan.

Find Out the Things To Observe When Making Cell Phone Purchases

January 3rd, 2009

A huge and growing cell phone UK market following the rule of introducing the latest camera phone has made it extraordinarily tough work for mobile phone customers to compare mobile promotions. Most of the time, there are various aspects that folk may need to look into when making mobile phone comparisons that some of the most fundamental ones get forgotten about. Find the best Samsung phone deals online with MobileShop.

As a result, you always end up using a mobile phone which is either too expensive or one which is not perfect for your cell phone usage profile. So we tell you here about the two most foremost things that folk should forever investigate when making mobile phone purchases. This may help people land a phone that at least meets the basic criteria folk are looking for.

The full cell phone market is booming on the basis of eye-opening features like movie players that keep getting added everyday. Though, a decidedly large majority of mobile customers buy phones based on their appearance, brand and superb marketing only to regret later when cell phone customers notice that their wonderful mobile device lacks an uncommonly basic feature like sending text or picture messages. Numerous mind-blowing high end mobiles sell on the basis of hype, brand image and looks at price tags that are unjustified given the lack of features. For example the very latest apple iphone does not let cell phone customers forward text messages to all. Unfortunately, this phone’s target audience, early 20s, gets to regret the loss of this cell phone feature only after spending weeks worth of pocket money on it. So make sure that your good new cell phone has all the features like camcorders you require before getting it. Since cell phone companies will never tell individuals about the excellent features like mp3 players that their mobiles lack, researching online cell phone write ups is the very best way to do it.

Can you use this scorecard for a major victory in your fight against atrophy?

Hi Mike!

This issue of P V T has about 1200 words (about 5 minutes to read).

Best Regards, Mike Hayden ============================================================ ============================================================

============================================================ My sec^ret plan that made personal history. ============================================================

You know it’s that time of year again. You’re thinking about your Resolutions for 2005. I recently asked about 200 people this one question: What is the one thing that you could start doing today that would improve the quality of your life?

They emailed their answers to me. I found that nearly A L L replies showed this answer: get more exercise, get in shape, lo^se wei^ght. So, I’m pretty sure you have similar goals. After all, exercise helps your heart and may prevent the onset of Parkinson’s. Exercise positively clears up an atrophied mind.

Still, the hard part is fulfillment: D O I N G I T! Since I’ve been doing it for decades, I consider myself somewhat of an expert. Here’s how I D I D it…

… My 4-step plan on how to think, act, and mold a healthier body even if you can’t lo^se wei^ght! Plus new tricks to fight personal atrophy.

Step 1

I wrote down a list of things I C O U L D do if I were really going to exercise. I did NOT consider my list a commitment. I just jotted down my ideas, even activities I had ne^ver done before.

Step 2

Alongside each activity, I jotted down how much time it would take IF I were to do that activity. This gave me some idea of when I could do it - IF I were to do it. I then wrote a possible schedule, based on my daily activities - IF I were to do it.

Step 3

I developed a “scorecard” that would show my participation (IF I decided to do it).

Step 4

I thought about where I could post the scoreboard where I could see it as a daily reminder.

By this time, my mind had been tricked into saying, “O K, I will schedule 6 days a week with Monday off.” (Notice the sudden enthusiasm and tendency to over commit!)

(Read on to get your bonus download!)

============================================================ “OK Mike, what do you mean by scoreboard?” ============================================================

I will show you actual scoreboards examples in a moment. First, let me explain. My scoreboard R O W S show each day in a month. Its C O L U M N S list all my exercise possibilities. That way, I can track everything.

Here are the exercises (columns) on my list:

Walk, run, row/aerobic, jump rope, tai chi (fast set), hsing yi, ba gua, (open), (open), chest, back, Tibetan rites, chi kung, chi coiling, tai chi, stretch, abs.

Naturally, my list would be different from yours, should you choose to experiment with this idea.

I use the (open) columns for unspecified activities I want to include sometimes. Variety is the spice of life!

I also have columns for recording data from my Polar Heart Watch (aerobic zone arrows), recovery time. If you get into aerobic training, you’ll want a heart watch. I also have a column for weight.

Do I do all these exercises everyday? Heck no! Just take a look at this scoreboard from last February when I was spending every minute writing a book. http://www.SeniorManagementServices.com/Images/Feb04-less.gif For this whole month, I only took three 30-minute walks!

Here’s a more typical scoreboard. http://www.SeniorManagementServices.com/Images/Aug03-more.gif

Obviously, I don’t get around to every exercise every day or month. But, I have this theory that any exercise is 100 times better than none.

OK, here’s a blank scoreboard that YOU can download and tailor for your own exercise program. Print out as many copies as you need.

http://www.SeniorManagementServices.com/Images/training-scoreboar d.pdf

In this fo^rm, notice that I left right-hand columns for your aerobic zones (arrows) and weight.

============================================================ Yes, but can you deal with your own mind? ============================================================

When I am traveling, I usually run for exercise. It’s a good way to relieve the atrophy from sitting all day. For example, here’s a journal entry from a recent trip…

[...] From the motel, I run up a hill, turn left past the park where skate-boarders practice, then run the bridge across the Colorado River. Wow, that water is moving! I continue running to the lumberyard then turn around.

I run facing the tra^ffic so I can see oncoming cars. Today’s cars are so quiet they can sneak up from behind.

Some people are satisfied with running occasionally - or not at all. Fine. But, if you’re going to run, I recommend some basic equipment. Good shoes (I che^ck Runners Magazine for shoe evaluations) & running shorts.

I use a Polar Heart Watch for all aerobic training. For me, running without a heart watch is like driving without a speedometer. Also, I use a Timex watch with several timers and alarms.

I follow a written program that specifies a safe program of progress, and I keep a written progress record.

When running, I must deal with my friend, the mind. (The mind is the voice in the back of your head that sounds like you. It says things like, “Ambition is a poor excuse for not having enough sense to be lazy.”)

I remember running everywhere as a kid. That was fun! Then, one day my mind said something like,

“Hey! What’s the rush? Take it easy! Walking is fast enough. Sit down. Have a snack! Take a rest. Better yet, lie down. Take a nap.”

So, I quit running around. If you quit running as I did, then later decided to run, you probably discovered the mind’s resistance. Even if you’ve run hundreds or thousands of miles, the mind will try to make deals like this …

“Hey Mike, it’s too cold and windy. Be careful! You might fall down. You’ve run enough for today. Stop. You can run longer tomorrow.”

“But I’ve only been running 90 seconds!”

“Hey, that’s plenty! Don’t overdo it! You might over-train and hurt yourself! You’ve got your whole life to train. Run a couple more minutes then have a donut!”

“A donut? You know I’ve sworn off donuts.”

“OK, a brownie. You love chocolate! Look! There’s the convenience store. It’s OK. Just this once, pleeease!”

“Maybe I’ll stop on the way back.”

“That’s too long! By then, you could be in the hospital because some idiot ran over you! C’mon, there’s always tomorrow! Just walk today. You can always run tomorrow, OK?”

“NO DEALS! Tell you what. Che^ck back with me in 10 minutes.”

Within 10 minutes, my mind quits whining and starts nagging like this…

“Hey! Pick it up! You can’t expect to improve when you run like a slug! Get Moving! …yada…yada…yada…”

It ne^ver ends.

The bad news: running causes heart, lungs, muscles, and bones to wear down. The good news: the body knows how to repair itself.

So, just tell your mind, “NO DEALS!” And keep training!

============================================================ It’s your move! ============================================================

OK, my scorecard should help you get you started. It’s your move. Some people say they aren’t interested in exercise. I think it’s a way to hide the fact that they simply don’t think they can do it.

Are you really going to DO it this year? Or just lay there like a chicken with its body cut off?

But wait, I have one final question!

How could you use a scoreboard system like this to score a major victory in your fight against atrophy and dis-ease in your own business?

Don’t let atrophy stunt the growth of your business!

Until next week…

Four Ways to Handle Arguments in a Healthy Manner

January 2nd, 2009

Controlling anger or handling arguments can be the biggest challenge to face any relationship. The strongest way to battle this problem is to direct anger in a constructive manner. This may seem strange, but yes anger can be dealt with constructively. The easiest way to solve a problem is to find and get to the root of the issue.

If you find your days interrupted and thrown off track by major disagreements causing yelling, screaming, and just utter frustration - focus your energy not on the argument, but rather on strategies to defuse the rage and grow the relationship.

1. Redirecting Ammo. Avoid using your spouse or partners vulnerability against them. If they have told you something in confidence, redirecting these vulnerabilities can be very damaging to the idea of trust. Trust is the underlining and base of any relationship. Making your partner feel emotionally safe is of the greatest importance.

2. It is OK to be Angry. Do not ever feel guilty about feeling angry and thus suppressing these feelings. Negative feelings are natural. Recognizing anger in the proper manner and learning to control these feelings while directing them constructively can instantly solve many problems. When your anger is legitimate sort the reasons in which make it legitimate. This will then put yourself in better position to show how you truly feel to your partner and present solutions to possibilities of change.

3. Not an Enemy. Make it very clear that a disagreement doesn’t mean you are instantly enemies. No matter how much love exists in any relationship, know that there will be conflicts. Verbal and most definitely physical violence should never be brought into the conflict. Fair arguing limits the chances of that happening while preventing name-calling, cursing, screaming, blaming, and empty threats.

4. Perception is Key. Acknowledge your partner’s perceptions and overall emotions about the problem at hand. It is also very important that you look inside yourself for the same thing. It is extremely important that right and wrong ways of feeling do not exist in this context. Once again conflict and disagreements are inevitable. Finding a way to present yourself as a genuinely caring person who is willing to simply listen will help guide yourself as well as your partner or spouse to the root of whatever the problem may be. Perceiving the root of the problem, as well as the opinions of your partner will drastically help in creating solutions.

Love - Are You Similar To Each Other?

December 31st, 2008

How similar are you with your partner? Agreed that both of you are in love, and enjoy each others togetherness. You like each other and want to live together till you die. You may say that you love him/her with your body and soul. What about similarities between both of you? Is your love result of these similarities? Or despite few similarities you love each other? Similarities affect relationship to some extent and are important to discuss.

Work interest - Do you have common work interest? Are you qualified in the same stream? or your work interests are different? Common work interests lead to better understanding, but this is not very important.

Hobbies - Do you have similar hobbies? Even if they are not common, do any of you have any hobby that the other partner dislikes?

Values - how similar are your beliefs and values? Do you support same political party or your views are opposite to each other? What about your opinions on major issues of life? What about goals? Are your thought processes similar or different? These can make a major difference in the quality of love and life.

Living together can become difficult if the dissimilarities are many. Conflicts take major energy and time. There is no time left to focus on love and living together if major time is spent in sorting out differences. It is easier to feel love in the beginning if the similarities are few. As times passes, dissatisfaction rises and cracks appear in the relationship. It is difficult to live with a person who holds totally opposite views. More similarities always help in making love last for a longer time.
